Fold the fabric, apply dye, pile on ice. Vivid, unpredictable — and fun to do with friends.
Ice dyeing runs on one simple idea: let water do the work. You pile ice on scrunched fabric, sprinkle powdered reactive dye over the top, and walk away. As the ice melts, color travels with the water — pulling through folds, pooling where it meets, leaving soft watercolor edges no brush could make. The result is always a surprise.
Different folds give you different effects. Scrunch for organic blooms, spiral for radiating color, accordion for stripes. You pick your palette, scatter the dye, and step back. When you come back to rinse it out, the pattern is already made.
GIGIPAYNE Studio in Bangkok runs this as a relaxed, playful session — genuinely fun with friends, and a favorite for kids and family. You leave with a one-of-a-kind ice-dyed t-shirt, a cotton shawl, and a bandana, full of vivid, unpredictable color.
Your Creative Project
During the workshop you will create a custom ice-dyed textile piece at GIGIPAYNE Studio in Bangkok.
You will leave with:
1 colorful ice-dyed t-shirt
1 cotton shawl (175×80 cm)
1 cotton bandana (50×50 cm)
Each piece features vivid, one-of-a-kind color patterns shaped by your folding choices and how the ice moved the dye through the fabric.
Techniques & Materials
Participants work through the full ice dyeing process from start to finish.
You will:
Prep cotton so it takes reactive dye evenly
Fold, scrunch, or bind textiles to shape the pattern
Scatter powdered dyes in your chosen palette
Pile ice on top and let melt carry the color through the fabric
Rinse the piece and see what the ice made
All materials are provided, including:
Cotton t-shirts or scarves
Reactive powdered dyes
Ice dyeing trays and tools
Protective gloves and dyeing equipment
