  • Introduction to Katazome

    Step into the world of Katazome, a centuries-old Japanese textile dyeing technique that combines intricate stenciling with natural dyes. This fascinating art form, originating from the Edo period, uses hand-cut stencils and rice flour to block dye penetration, creating detailed patterns on fabric. Through this workshop, you'll discover the cultural significance of Katazome and how it has adorned traditional textiles like kimonos and furoshiki for generations.

    During the workshop, you'll master the Katazome technique from start to finish. Begin by learning how to prepare stencils and apply rice paste resist, which is essential for achieving the beautiful, intricate patterns. Using natural pigments, such as indigo, you’ll learn the precise process of dyeing the fabric. Our skilled instructors will guide you step by step, ensuring that you understand the delicate balance of craftsmanship and creativity that this method requires.


  • Creative Project

    You’ll have the opportunity to create your own Katazome scarf and handkerchiefs, immersing yourself in this traditional Japanese art. After dyeing, the rice paste is washed away, unveiling the stunning design you’ve crafted.
