Overview
Explore the art of batik wax-resist dyeing, where patterns are created by applying hot wax before adding color to fabric.
In this hands-on workshop at GIGIPAYNE Studio in Bangkok, you will design a simple motif, apply wax using traditional tools, and dye the fabric to reveal layered shapes and contrasts. The process is tactile, creative, and beginner-friendly.
This workshop is especially valuable for artists exploring textile as a new medium and designers interested in the basics of surface pattern creation. By the end of the session, you will understand how wax resist works and leave with a finished textile piece that reflects your own design.
Techniques & Materials
Participants will practice the essential steps used in batik.
You will learn how to:
Plan a simple pattern for textile design
Apply hot wax using tjanting tools and brushes
Build resist areas that shape the final pattern
Dye the fabric to create contrast and color
Remove wax to reveal the finished design
All materials are provided, including:
Cotton scarf for dyeing
Wax resist materials
Tjanting tools and brushes
Textile dyes and dyeing equipment
Throughout the workshop you will experiment with wax lines, shapes, and color combinations.

We did two workshops with Gigi during our stay in Bangkok and had the best time. We visit Bangkok once a year and this was our first time doing something like this. We did the batik and eco printing workshops; Gigi is very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful and is also super creative. An experience to recommend for anyone keen to get hands on and do something creative, we’re already looking forward to next year!
