Carolyn Saiget

I attended a batik workshop (at the end of Feb). I'm older and was a bit unsure of what I was getting into. Instead, the instructor was warm, friendly, patient, and encouraging. She knew how to gauge how much instruction/support I needed and was carful to make sure my project was "my project". I was able to immerse myself into my work and enjoyed the creativity, adventure, and learning. The experience was well worth the time and money. If I ever get back to Bangkok, I want to take another class with Gigi Payne.

This is one of the most fun and rewarding things to do while you are in Bangkok! I loved GiGi’s and Arthur’s workshop. They support me with my scarf idea, prepared all materials for me and even delivered into my hotel! I would love to learn more about these fabric printing techniques! Thank you so much!

Batik is a wax-resist dyeing method — you draw a design onto cotton with melted wax, add color around it, and peel the wax away to reveal layered shapes and soft gradients. Learn one of the oldest textile techniques in Southeast Asia, or explore a new medium if you're already into art.

At GIGIPAYNE Studio in Bangkok, you sketch your motif, then work with a tjanting tool — a small copper-tipped pen that holds hot wax — to apply wax directly onto your cotton scarf. The design is entirely yours. The pace is yours too — each step is guided until the result is right. Once your wax lines cool, you brush on dye, building color and contrast by hand. Every mark on the cotton comes from you.

A focused, meditative session — a good way to spend a few hours away from the city noise. You leave with a hand-dyed cotton scarf featuring your own batik artwork.

Your Creative Project

In this session you design and dye your own batik piece using wax-resist technique — a cotton scarf (175×50 cm) for adults or a small bandana (50×50 cm) for kids. Made start to finish by your hands.
